We’ve been driving a Camry under the guise of a top-level XLE and in a more native SE trim. Both are spacious and comfortable, and the XLE is really luxurious.
However, there is a serious gap in material quality between the initial level model and the more expensive version, and the middle part of the dashboard makes some of us feel cool with its uninspiring design.
The Camry is a large sedan, and there’s plenty of cargo space and interior storage both in the trunk and in its cabin with the back seat folded. It’s not the best in every storage category, but overall, it’s very competitive.
Toyota moved the hybrid Camry battery from the trunk down the back seat, so hybrid owners don’t have to sacrifice carrying capacity for extra mpg.
Toyota’s touchscreen infotainment system — called Entune 3.0 — is standard throughout the Camry lineup, with an improved version available as an option. Entune has many features and responds reasonably well to user feedback in our tests, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility is standard.
Toyota Camry XSE Performance
Camry Hybrid power is always delivered seamlessly, and there’s a staggering amount of thrust available. If you find yourself speeding at 30 mph and suddenly have to pass, sprints from 30 to 50 will be completed easily. The brakes are just as sharp, though road test editor Chris Walton calls them “almost like wood”.
The pedals are a bit tight, and it only takes a little time to get used to. But instead of lamenting the brakes and the lack of sense of pedals, you’ll just be grateful for the promptness.
And that’s why the Camry XSE Hybrid makes so much more sense than the Camry TRD: It doesn’t lie to you. Instead of sacrificing the best part of the Camry — that is, its use as an A-point-to-point B engine — for a half-baked effort on a sporty feel, he took that quality and developed it.
The hybrid powertrain is smoother than the rugged V-6, the inside is quieter at any speed, and as our test numbers show, the XSE Hybrid stops and drives almost as well as the TRD without the added inconvenience of a grueling journey.
