New 2022 Toyota Avalon XLE Review

New 2022 Toyota Avalon XLE Review

2022 Toyota Avalon XLE – The fifth-generation Toyota Avalon was launched in 2019, advancing the coupe-like look on the sedan canvas. Based on the company’s widely used and new global architecture, Avalon today offers the best travel and comfort. It advances a beautiful blend of elegance and sportiness, priced at thousands of dollars less than a luxury model.

Avalon 2022 straddles the line between staid and attractive with various trims. For those looking for a comfortable stroll, the standard XLE or Limited provides V-6 power, smooth travel, and spacious cabins. sporty XSE trim or zestier TRD models could fill that niche.

Are you a hypermiling fuel-scrooge? There is a hybrid powertrain available as well, which delivers an impressive 43 mpg in our real-world testing. No matter which one you choose, Avalon is well equipped and very modern, offering abundant standard driver assistance technology.

Avalon has several rivals — the large sedan segment is collapsing as more new car buyers choose SUVs — but it is one of the best of its kind.

Toyota is doubling its popular large sedan and offering more Avalon versions than ever before. For the first time in the history of signboards, the Toyota Avalon 2022 will be available with all-wheel drive.

However, there is a catch – the new drivetrain will not be paired to the existing V6 engine. Instead, Avalons riding all wheels will borrow 2.5-liter four-cylinders (205 horsepower, 185 lb-ft of torque) from the Camry for motivation, or about 100 hp and 80 lb-ft less than the V6. However, its competitors with AWD are almost exclusively powered by V6 engines, so buyers in cold climates may feel stunned by its lack of tenacity.

The arrival of all-wheel drive is not the only change to Avalon 2022. In-car technology was improved with the addition of Android Auto and USB-C ports for charging and connectivity.

There is also a stylish and refined XSE Nightshade Edition featuring black painted exterior accents. Finally, the sporty Avalon TRD gets an optional summer performance tire that should provide a more cornering grip. How well does it all stack up? Check out our Expert Rankings for our in-depth evaluation of Avalon this year.

Toyota Avalon 2022 Models

Toyota Avalon 2022 is available in five trim levels: XLE, Touring, XSE Nightshade, Limited, and TRD. All trims are standardly equipped with front-wheel drive and a 3.5-liter V6 engine (301 horsepower, 267 lb-ft of torque) mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is available on XLE and Touring trims with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine (205 hp, 185 lb-ft). Available Toyota Avalon Hybrids are reviewed separately.

2022 Toyota Avalon XLE Interior

Inside, Avalon is spacious with enough space for five adults. Toyota dressed its largest sedan with a rich selection of soft-touch materials, convincing faux leather or genuine leather, and wood or aluminum trim on some models. In all but the basic trim, the front passenger is encoded with heated seats and cooled with lumbar power control.

When it comes to the overall look of the cabin, Avalon currently represents a huge step relative to the model of the previous generation. A vast waterfall-style middle stack separates the driver and front passenger and shows off handsome switchgear and an easy-to-reach touchscreen.

The rear seats provide plenty of room for tall passengers to stretch their legs. In addition, there is a cave trunk with 16 cubic feet of cargo space. The standard folding rear seat with 60/40 split allows you to easily expand this capacity when toting large items.

In testing our non-hybrid version, we matched seven carry-on suitcases in the trunk and 18 with folded rear seats. Hybrids we tested back in 2019 used larger old battery packs that traded into luggage and limited cargo space. The car was more fitted with suitcases (six with used rear seats and 17 with them folded), but Toyota said the new lithium-ion batteries were smaller and retained all Avalon luggage space.

Toyota Avalon Safety Features

The Toyota Avalon is also equipped with the latest driver safety features. These items include automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring, active lane control, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and adaptive cruise control. The only spending feature is the optional surround display camera system.

For 2022, the Toyota Avalon experienced one of the most significant engineering changes with the addition of an optional all-wheel-drive for the first time. XSE Nightshade Edition was also launched. As for 2023, we expect Avalon to be followed by a light note change.

Toyota Avalon Engine

Under the hood, Avalon has two engine options. The base model has a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 205 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque. This one sends power to the wheel using 8-speed automatic transmission.

Front-wheel drive is standard; all-wheel drive is available and at no additional cost. The available 3.5-liter V6 engine develops 301 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque. which can transmit power to the front wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Marketed separately is the Avalon Hybrid model. This one comes with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 176 horsepower or 215 horsepower with an electric motor at work. Its EPA-rated 43 mpg easily leads all major sedans, beating 32 mpg for Avalon’s standard gas engine.

Fuel Economy

With gas-specific Avalon, the EPA estimates mileage at up to 22/32 mpg city/highway. In road fuel economy testing, it recorded 34 mpg. The Avalon hybrid reaches EPA estimated mileage of up to 43/44 mpg. When testing one of these models, we observed a fuel economy of 43 mpg in road driving.

Avalon’s basic model XLE trim comes with amenities such as an eight-speaker sound system, Bluetooth connectivity, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto Integration. Standard 9.0-inch touchscreen, along with Scout GPS Link navigation, Wi-Fi hotspots, and Amazon Alexa compatibility.

The optional upgrade list includes a 14-speaker JBL sound system, an integrated navigation system, and wireless device charging.

2022 Toyota Avalon Release Date and Price

We have not received an official arrival date from Toyota for Avalon 2022, but based on previous releases, the arrival of summer later in 2021 seems possible.

Prices are also not available. As a carryover vehicle, we expect the price to remain close to the current model of $36,830 to $43,830 (including destination costs) of the MSRP for the sedan.

This full-size sedan has several competitors left. Among the mainstream models, there are the Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, Nissan Maxima, and Kia Cadenza.
