2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport
Toyota Tacoma became the sales leader despite age, no longer being young since its first launch.
It’s earned a well-deserved reputation for longevity and durability, which helps trucks stay near the top of the resale value chart year after year. It’s offered in several styles, including couples aimed at off-road enthusiasts.
2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport
A 159-hp inline four-cylinder engine and a six-speed automatic transmission are standard, while the 278-hp V-6 comes with a six-speed automatic or manual transmission.
The Tacoma and Jeep Gladiator are the only two pickups sold in the U.S. with three pedals.
The Tacoma’s base powertrain is the most powerful in its segment, but the rear-drive single-cab model remains a much more affordable option than the Gladiator and Honda Ridgeline.
It can tow a little more than the 6,800-pound Nissan Frontier, but its uncomfortable sitting position, poor fuel economy, and cheap rental interior furniture hold up the capable Tacoma.
Toyota added two new appearance packages to the SR5 trim levels for the 2024 Tacomas. The SX package, previously available on the SR trim, is available for the V-6 SR5 with Access Cab and Double Cab bodies.
It added black over-fenders, wheels with black wheel nuts, and more badging details and black trim scattered throughout.
The Chrome package, available in the SR5 Double Cab with a five-foot bed, adds 18-inch polishing wheels, chrome door handles, exhaust ends, a rear door logo, and a leather-wrapped shift knob.
SR5 models with the V-6 now get a Toyota Smart Key and a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and each V-6 now comes with automatic dual-zone climate control.
Limited trim levels now get a power-adjustable driver’s seat, an 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen, Smart Key, and a 360-degree camera on the Limited Double Cab Tacoma.
TRD Sport trim is offered with burnt Electric Lime paint, while this year’s TRD Pro’s special color is the orange-red Solar Octane.
Tacoma TRD Sport Interior
Tacomas with higher trim offer many features; they are packed into an interior that leans the focus of a rugged, off-road truck.
There are some soft-touch ingredients; everything is well screwed, and the adjustable driver’s seat powers to correct the awkward low driving position that remains in the Tacoma trim without it.
Nevertheless, there are no mistaking back-to-basics nuances. This is especially true compared to some of its competitors, such as the newly redesigned Nissan Frontier.
Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon are new to the 2024 model year and look good inside. The infotainment system works well, but it doesn’t do much other than provide the basics.
Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are thankfully included, and they dress up boring—but functional—multimedia interfaces. Toyota’s graphics remain quite tired, but at least simple and useful.
Tacoma TRD Sport Engine
Tacoma’s optional 278-hp V-6 engine produces 265 lb-ft of torque and delivers decent performance and pulling muscles.
Still, the four-cylinder 159-hp base produces only 180 lb-ft of torque and is underpowered and best avoided.
We also recommend avoiding persistent six-speed automatic transmissions with either engine — sticking with the six-speed manual and V-6.
Connected with automatic, even larger machines sometimes struggle. The TRD Sport and Limited models are cities driving-oriented, while the TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro versions are looking for rougher roads.
Tacoma can overcome rough trails or back roads with ease. It can be equipped to take advantage of stepping on the ground or cruising the sidewalk.
Limited provides a satisfying ride that is smoother and quieter than the off-road version. And the Tacoma TRD Pro has lifted suspension, fat shock absorbers, and squeaky tires, making it one of the best trucks for off-road but less fun to drive daily.
Towing Capacity
The Tacoma TRD Sport can tow up to 6,800 pounds with rear-wheel drive; The four-wheel drive version can pull 6,500 pounds.
The Tacoma’s maximum payload capacity of 1685 pounds is only available on two-wheel-drive models with four-cylinder engines, with four-wheel drive and V-6 motors, resulting in significantly lower capabilities.
