For 2022, the GT86 is designed with lightweight construction, a low center of gravity, and a 2.0-liter responsive engine making the GT86 fun to drive. The comfortable and high-quality interior balances the driving dynamics of the edge of the seat, giving the sports cabin a premium finish.

The GT86 and BRZ were launched in 2012, and their future has been in doubt for years due to relatively low sales in a declining market. But both companies have committed to developing replacements, with the GR86 a key part of Toyota’s growing car performance line-up.
Toyota boss Akio Toyoda is a major supporter of using performance models to improve the brand image under the Gazoo Racing division, which also includes various Toyota motorsport programs.
The original GT86 pre-dates the brand’s creation, which began with GR Supra and will also include gr Yaris, the first model developed purely by Gazoo Racing. The next GT86 is set to be renamed to bring it in line with the nomenclature.
The next-generation sports car will feature some major changes from existing models. While the original was built on a Subaru platform, the company’s current architecture is not suitable for rear-drive cars, so Autocar understands the new model is set to be built on Toyota’s TNGA platform.

With Toyota leading on the platform side, it’s up to Subaru to once again give it a boost. As we have previously publicized (and a new report appears to confirm) the existing 2.0-liter natural aspiration unit will be activated for the turbocharged 2.4-liter boxer powerplant currently used in the Climbing, Legacy and Outback models.
The engine produces 252bhp in the Ascent, a figure that would represent a significant upgrade on the output of the outgoing model. Forced induction will also provide a substantial increase in torque over older cars, too, providing a draw for those dissatisfied with the performance of the outgoing GT86 and BRZ.
Both brands may want to maintain the drivability and character of the naturally sucked units, but this needs to be offset by what buyers demand – and that seems to be an on-tap snorting turbocharged unit.

Toyota and Subaru will also want to increase the aesthetic appeal of new cars, both inside and out. The old GT86 and BRZ were widely criticized for their low-rent cabins, so expect improved technology, material use, and fit and finish. Whether the model becomes more than a true four-seater to really help stand up against more practical rivals remains to be seen.
Those changes – especially the increase in power – will likely see the prices of both cars increase. However, both brands will be aware of the proximity of more premium models, such as the Audi TT and BMW Z4. Toyota doesn’t want to step on Supra’s own toes, either, especially in Japan where a four-cylinder version of the reborn sports car is offered.
The BRZ and second-generation GT86 will build an expanding relationship between Subaru and Toyota. As well as sports cars, the two companies are working together to develop new EV platforms and electric SUVs.
Toyota is considering a hybrid version of the car’s future performance model–but only once the system’s weight is reduced.
The Japanese company is in the process of electrifying all of its models, with a heavy focus on hybrid systems. But the new GR Yaris will only be offered with a three-cylinder, 1.6-liter turbocharged petrol engine, although 80% of Yaris sales are expected to be hybrids.
