2022 Toyota Corolla Apex Horsepower
Corollas equipped with apex editions come standard with a 169-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder that comes as optional on the Corolla but will be paired to a sport-tuned exhaust.
Most editions of the Apex Corollas will come with the continuous variable transmission (CVT) currently available on the Corolla, but 120 of the 6000 that go into production will come with a six-speed manual transmission with rev-matching capabilities. Those with the manual transmission will be based on the SE trim level.
2022 Toyota Corolla Apex Specs
Corollas equipped with apex edition get an updated appearance, especially in the front fascia. It gets a more aggressive attitude through the sport of rear and front spoilers and copper accents running in front of the vehicle. The new spring coil also lowered the vehicle by 0.6 inches, adding to its sporty appearance.
Under the skin, Apex gets a new spring that lowers the car by 0.6 inches to help reduce body movement when cornering. Back up short springs are company silencers specially tuned for apex edition, as well as rigid anti-roll bars to help improve body control through angles. In total, the Apex Edition suspension is 47 percent stiffer at the front and 33 percent stiffer at the back.
Under the wheel arches sits a new set of 18-inch alloy wheels that are 2.2 pounds lighter at every angle. Toyota claims it specifically designed the wheels to assist in cooling the brakes, meaning you can drive harder for longer without boiling your stoppers.
Either summer or all seasons of rubber stick to new wheels. If you don’t live in an area where tires throughout the season are a must, you may have to spec summer tires.
2022 Toyota Corolla Apex Edition Interior
Despite a number of significant changes to make the Apex Edition Sporty, Toyota has chosen not to give the small sedan any more power. That means they naturally sucked 2.0-liter four-cylinder corolla XSE still makes 169 hp at 6,600 rpm of torque and 151 lb-ft.
Peak torque does come slightly higher in the rev range, though; 4,800 rpm compared to the usual 4,400 rpm XSE. Toyota does not explain the slightly higher torque peak but does note that the two-discharge-port oil pump and electric water pump have made the engine more thermally efficient.
2022 Toyota Corolla Apex Powertrain
However, there is one big win when it comes to the Apex Edition powertrain: A small four-banger can be paired with a six-speed manual. There is an optional CVT, too, but if you go for sporty driving, deep down l l ls you know automatic is not the way to do it. The manual also features iMT-that’s Toyota-speak for automatic rev-matching. Thus, even those who are not familiar with the art of heel-and-toe can downshift with confidence during more vibrant driving.
Although the Apex Edition is great news, don’t think for a moment that Toyota has forgotten the rest of the Corolla range. For 2022, all Corolla get Android Auto in addition to Apple CarPlay compatibility. There is also a new rear side airbag (two, in particular) that brings the total number in the car to 10.
Rear traffic alerts and blind-spot monitoring are now standard kits at XLE and XSE values and are optional on LE, LE Hybrid, and SE trims. The NIGHTshade SE model is back for 2021, too, and all Corollas get a system of turning off automatic engines that turn off four pots if left idling for too long.
The new suspension was track-tuned and as a result, stiffer, intended to reduce body roll and improve steering response. The body roll also decreases through a solid stabilizer bar with higher stiffness. To solve all this, summer tires wrapped around 18-inch aluminum wheels are optional on apex editions.

Toyota did not disclose how many apex edition sports packages would add to the SE or XSE trim levels, but those trim levels start at $23,230 and $26,680, respectively, for 2021. The Corolla Apex will go on sale this fall.
