2022 Toyota Avalon AWD Redesign, Release Date – The Avalon Toyota just went through a comprehensive redesign in 2019, so the next redesign is likely not to come long enough. The Avalon 2022 will, however, arrive with one significant change for the powertrain: an optional all-wheel drive.
Fresh from 2019 redesign that makes it wider and lower and the addition of a TRD Sportier model in 2020, we hope there are no visual changes to the 2022 Toyota Avalon. The only obvious difference is the subtle “AWD ” badge on the back of the all-wheel-drive model.

Inside will be many of the same, as this almost-luxury Toyota sedan will continue with its classy cabin design and high-tech Goodies such as the standard Entune audio Plus Infotainment system, 9-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, Bluetooth Audio streaming, in-car Wi-Fi hotspot, and much more.
2022 Toyota Avalon Powertrain
The Avalon 2022 Standard powertrain will remain the 301-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 engine paired for an eight-speed automatic transmission that ships power to the front wheels. Under a large hood, the change for the Avalon 2022 will be an optional all-wheel-drive system paired with a 205-HP 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission.
This year, the great Toyota Avalon sedan celebrated its 25th anniversary by announcing its first two: all-wheel drive and four-cylinder propulsion without the help of hybrid electricity. The new drivetrain is essentially divided with the latest RAV4 and 2020 Toyota Camry AWD, which will precede the 2022 Toyota Avalon AWD to market for about six months.
We dig into the way the system works in our AWD first appearance, so let’s focus here on answering the question: Is this a 2.5 liter four-cylinder powerful enough and refined to match the AWD luxury sedan?
2022 Toyota Avalon Performances
The good news is that Avalon comes standard with a lower limiting double rear exhaust system that endows Camry with 3 additional horsepower and lb-ft torque, for a total of 205 HP at 6,600 rpm and 185 lb-ft at 4,600 RPM. The less good news is that this is down 10 HP from the total output system generated by the Avalon Hybrid to a higher-compression version of this same 2.5-liter engine.
And although Toyota did not reveal the Total torque system for hybrids, without the two electric motors spinning through e-CVT, the sensation of instant torque at a much less launch in the Avalon AWD, which makes do with the eight conventional transmission speeds. At least it comes with a relatively short 3.18:1 axle gearing — The pencil comes out up to 15 percent shorter overall in the first three gears, relative to the Avalon V-6 front drive.
This all-wheel-drive system will boast an electromagnetic decoupling system that will break the rear axle when you do not need power at all four wheels to help conserve fuel. When the state becomes slippery, the all-wheel-drive will activate and ship up to 50% of the engine power to the rear wheels.

Avalon currently receives IIHS’s highest honors as a TOP Safety pick + model Thanks to the “good ” score in all crash tests, “good ” rating in the Test LED light with an optional projector light and “Superior ” Prevention front accident with automatic emergency standard braking. With no expected changes in the 2022 safety equipment Avalon, this ranking should be constantly changing.
Does it feel slower than a good Front-drive Avalon? Yes. Will the problem or obstruct the typical Avalon buyer? Probably not-this is not a bracket racer, by and large. And in the same exact all-season tire that drives the front Avalons to get, it will definitely be out-accelerating the front-driver on the snowy autocross track.
2022 Toyota Avalon Specs
Toyota invited us to try Avalon Dynamic Torque Control AWD only on the course as it was established at the Soldier Hollow Nordic Center in Utah, where many events from the 2002 Winter Olympics were staged. As you may recall from the previous descriptions of this system, the dynamic reference name torque is strictly front to back, not side to side.
A rear axle decouples clutch when torque is not required (though the Prop shaft is always spinning), and when involved it can exchange sending up to 50 percent of the engine torque to the required rear. Torque is sent to the rear whenever the front wheel is detected, and the back is also engaged proactively, during launch, when accelerated at the corners, etc.
The hardware suspension and most of the tuning systems are divided by the short 1.8-inch wheelbase Camry AWD — including new springs that increase the body’s 0.2 inches to preserve ground clearance for the slightly lower exhaust system and the rear 22.2 mm anti-roll Bar – down from 25.4 mm in front of the Avalons drive.
An AWD Camry is also on hand for our snow crossing enjoyment. In both cars, the stability control (which can not be turned off) is programmed to permit the intelligent driver to induce Drift well controlled while obediently catching and correcting the slightest misstep by anyone less skilled in terms of slippery.
The traction control can be turned off, which is useful in cases where a little wheelspin can burn through a snowy layer to expose the grippier surface underneath. It was a wheelbase stretch and one hundred pounds or more fancy a colluding tooth to make Avalon AWD feel less tossable and draftable from AWD Camry – not that anyone cares.
Toyota Avalon Model
Only two levels of Trim Avalon will be offered with AWD: XLE and Limited. The price will not be resolved until it is closer to their fall 2020 launch, but we were told to expect this to be a no-cost pricing option in line with the V-6-powered XLE and limited Front-drivers, so figures about $37,000 and $43,000.
We compared the content of the relative feature of the Camry XLE AWD loaded and the same price of the Avalon XLE AWD base and determined that the loaded Camry fit us better.
We also feel that this longer drivetrain suits the buyers of Camry better, and we are confident that the account for availability is limited in Avalon and the fact that it is not offered on the Lexus ES 350 built in the same factory on the same architecture as the Avalon wheelbase sharing. It’s just not subtle enough for a Lexus task and strikes us as somewhat marginal in Avalon.
2022 Toyota Avalon Price
2022 the Avalon Toyota may arrive at Showrooms in the autumn of 2021.
Price is not yet available, but without any changes to the core lineup, we expect the price to stay close to the current model MSRP range from $36,755 to $43,455 (including destination cost).
